Module/Course Description
Course Title: Mathematics II
Course Code: UU-HSF-1204-ZM
Programme: Health Sciences Foundation Programme (HSFP)
Credits: 8.00
Course Description:
Rationale
This course develops students’ understanding of mathematical and statistical concepts at A-Level standard, with particular emphasis on pre-calculus statistics, probability, data representation, and inferential reasoning. It introduces core principles of algebraic techniques, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, vectors, and probability, alongside descriptive and inferential statistics. The course equips students with the quantitative reasoning and analytical skills required to interpret data, evaluate statistical results, and draw valid conclusions, providing essential preparation for undergraduate study in health sciences, where statistical literacy and data-driven decision-making are fundamental.
The aim of this course is to prepare students at A-Level standard with the mathematical and statistical knowledge and skills required for undergraduate health sciences programmes.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
i. Define and use fundamental statistical and mathematical terminology accurately.
ii. Solve mathematical and statistical word problems using appropriate methods and reasoning.
iii. Apply the correct steps involved in hypothesis testing and statistical decisionmaking.
iv. Work effectively and collaboratively in group-based mathematical and statistical tasks.
v. Analyse results and draw valid conclusions based on mathematical and statistical evidence.
vi. Construct and interpret graphical representations of data using appropriate techniques.
