Biology IIModule Details
Module/Course Description
Course Title: Biology II
Course Code: UU-HSF-1201-ZM
Programme: Health Sciences Foundation Programme (HSFP)
Credits: 12.00
Course Description:
Rationale
This course introduces the anatomy and physiology of animals with direct reference to the human body, focusing on animal form, function, and diversity. Emphasis is placed on developing a systems-based understanding that integrates cell and molecular biology, genetics, anatomical organisation, and physiological processes. The course examines key topics including body organisation, cellular structure and function, tissue types, and major body systems such as the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, and sensory systems. This course also includes selected practical investigations in biological diversity, plant structure and growth, and ecology, to provide a comparative foundation that supports understanding of living systems relevant to health sciences.
The aim of the course is to develop foundational understanding of animal and human anatomy and physiology required for progression into undergraduate health sciences programmes.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
i. Using appropriate model systems, explain the molecular and cellular basis of physiological functions in animals.
ii.Using model systems, integrate the regulation of organ system functions within a whole organism using feedback mechanisms to explain homeostasis.
iii.Explain structure-function relationships in animals, demonstrating how anatomical form is related to physiological function.
