Rationale


This course is designed to equip students with essential communication and study skills required to cope effectively with the academic demands of university teaching and learning. It introduces students to the expectations of higher education at an early stage, promoting student-centred and self-directed learning. The course supports the development of effective learning strategies, critical thinking, communication competence, and professional skills, enabling students to become independent, reflective, and effective scholars within health sciences undergraduate programmes.


The aim of this course is to develop students’ academic communication, study, and professional skills to support successful participation in undergraduate health sciences education.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
i. Demonstrate effective study attitudes and learning strategies that support independent, student-centred, and lifelong learning in a higher education context.
ii. Apply memory, reading, and problem-solving techniques, including the PQ4R method and general problem-solving approaches, to support academic learning.
iii. Use appropriate test-taking strategies and time-management skills to enhance academic performance.
iv. Communicate ideas clearly and effectively through written work, including essays, critiques, creative writing, and professional documents such as CVs and emails.
v. Demonstrate oral and interpersonal communication skills through debates, project presentations, and collaborative academic activities.
vi. Apply communication and analytical skills to health-related contexts, including the interpretation and presentation of medical case studies.
vii. Demonstrate essential interpersonal communication skills within healthcare settings.
viii. Apply academic learning to practical clinical interactions by communicating effectively with patients, caregivers, and colleagues.
ix. Demonstrate the effective use of tools to manage their studies efficiently.
