Rationale

This course is a critical component of the curriculum, as it equips future nurses with the pedagogical skills and educational knowledge needed to effectively teach, mentor, and lead within academic and clinical settings while also contributing meaningfully to the advancement of nursing education. This course introduces students to major theoretical perspectives that inform nursing education, practice and research. It explores how this body of knowledge can be applied to guide policies and practices that enhance student learning and development, nursing research and ultimately nursing practice. 

The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes critical for effective teaching and learning, as well as for the implementation and management of nursing education programmes.

Learning Outcomes (Competences)  

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     State trends and philosophy in nursing education.
(ii)    Outline theories of learning. 
(iii)   Explain the Learning and the classroom environment. 
(iv)   Outline teaching/learning methods and learning aids. 
(v)    State educational objectives. 
(vi)   Demonstrate micro and peer teaching. 
(vii)  Develop curriculum, design and review.
(viii) Describe instructional design and programming. 
(ix)   Outline measurement and evaluation of learning and teaching. 
(x)    Manage nurse education and training programmes. 
(xi)   Give guidance, support and counselling to students in nursing education. 
(xii)  Educate and train community health personnel.
