Rationale


This course is a vital component of the programme, as it addresses the critical need for mental health competence in modern nursing practice. It is designed to develop students’ understanding of modern approaches to mental health focusing on the identification, prevention and nursing management of common mental health problems. Emphasising on therapeutic intervention, the course equips future nurses with the skills necessary to support individuals, families and communities.

The aim of this course is to equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to enhance their understanding of human behaviour and to competently care for individuals with mental illness.

 

Learning Outcomes (Competences) 


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     Describe mental health and psychology applied to nursing practice.
(ii)    Explain mental health services in Zambia. 
(iii)   State the concepts of mental health. 
(iv)   Outline conceptual models of psychiatric care. 
(v)    Describe psychiatric nursing skills. 
(vi)   Describe mental health across the life span. 
(vii)  Manage psychiatric conditions. 
(viii) Apply psychotherapeutic management on mental health clients. 
(ix)  Describe legal and ethical context of mental health and psychiatric nursing care.
(x)   Analyse women and mental health. 
(xi)  Explain community psychiatry. 
(xii) Describe mental health at primary care.
