Course Description:
Rationale
This course will enable students to examine various social problems within the whole school structure and the relationship between education and society. The course covers key aspects such as educational aims, methods, institutions, administration and curriculum - offering a sociological lens through which to view and evaluate the education system. Students will be introduced to sociology concepts and theories relevant to the field of education and to a number of issues raised by sociologists of education concerning the social institution of education.
The aim of this course is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the sociological principles and theories relevant to education, enabling them to critically examine the role of education in society and its impact on individuals, communities, and social structures.

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Discuss the relevance of educational sociology to the education system.
(ii) Analyse theories of educational sociology.
(iii) Discuss education and the Zambian society.
(iv) Explain the socio functions of schooling.
