Course Code: UU-BCH-3520-ZM

Programme: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing

Credits: 12.00

Course Description:

Rationale

This course is inherent part of the programme as it examines the structure and function of the following biological macromolecules in the context of cellular integrity, dynamics and metabolism: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. It is designed to enhance, deepen, and further integrate knowledge of the subject by developing different problem-solving skills and conceptual organisation. Through this course students will gain an understanding of normal biochemical processes and metabolism of biomolecules with particular emphasis on energy metabolism in human tissues.

The aim of the course is to provide nursing students with essential knowledge of biochemistry as a foundation for understanding human health and disease.

Learning Outcomes (Competences)

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Outline the general principles.
(ii)   Describe the carbohydrate metabolism.
(iii)  Describe the lipid metabolism.
(iv)  Describe the amino acid & nucleic acid metabolism.
(v)   Describe the protein synthesis.

Prerequisites: UU-IND-NURS100-ZM
