Course Description:
Rationale
This course enables students to gain knowledge on concepts relating to the care of adults in the acute care setting with commonly occurring medical-surgical problems. The emphasis of this course is placed on the nursing management and on the development of competence in providing and coordinating nursing care.
The aim of this course is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes necessary to provide comprehensive/holistic, patient – centred care to adults with common medical and surgical conditions across diverse healthcare settings.
Learning Outcomes (Competences)
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain the basic principles of medical nursing.
(ii) Manage clients with HIV and AIDS.
(iii) Provide nursing management to patients with common cardio -vascular disorders, respiratory disorders, genital Urinary tract disorders, gastro –Intestinal disorders, endocrine and metabolic disorders, nervous system disorders and dermato-venerology disorders.
(iv) Discuss the concepts of surgical nursing.
(v) Describe the nursing management of patients with wounds and burns, neoplasms, surgical conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, surgical conditions of the cardio-vascular system, surgical conditions of the respiratory system, surgical conditions of the Genito-urinary tract, surgical conditions of the endocrine system, surgical Conditions of the nervous system and orthopaedic conditions.
(vi) Explain the palliative care given to clients.
