Course Description:
Rationale
This course introduces the students to the science of pharmacology, emphasising the essential role of nurses in the safe preparation, management and administration of medications. It provides an in-depth understanding of the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and identifies the role of nerve pathways in the action of drugs.
The aim of this course is to equip nursing students with a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological principles and their practical application in clinical settings.
Learning Outcomes (Competences)
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain the basic elements of pharmacology.
(ii) Outline the general principles of pharmacology.
(iii) Describe the ordering and control of drugs.
(iv) Outline the legal, ethical & cultural aspects of pharmacology.
(v) Outline the chemotherapeutic agents.
(vi) Explain the inflammation and allergy.
(vii) Describe the drugs acting on the gastrointestinal system, haematopoietic system, respiratory system, skin, urinary system, reproductive system, endocrine system, obstetrics, autonomic pharmacology, central nervous system, the eye, ear, nose & throat and the treatment of malignant neoplasms.
(viii) Outline the miscellaneous drugs.
(ix) Explain various general topics on drugs.
