Course Description:
Rationale
The course is essential to the programme as it is designed to help students develop an understanding of the philosophy, objectives, theories and processes of professional nursing in various clinical settings. It supports students in acquiring knowledge, comprehension and skills in nursing techniques and in applying these skills effectively in clinical practice. Additionally, the course emphasises the importance of ethics as a guiding principle in nursing, encouraging students to reflect on ethical values and professional responsibilities that are integral to quality patient care and nursing professionalism.
The aim of this course is to provide student nurses with foundational knowledge, skills, and ethical principles essential for professional nursing practice, enabling them to deliver safe and patient-centred care across a variety of clinical and community settings.
Learning Outcomes (Competences)
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Discuss the history and current trends in professional nursing.
(ii) Describe the role of nurses within the health care delivery system.
(iii) Outline the ethics and etiquette in nursing practice.
(iv) Explain the legislation and legal aspects of nursing practice.
(v) Describe the concepts of health, wellness and illness.
(vi) Identify and describe nursing theories, models and processes.
(vii) Explain the elements of Information Education and Communication (IEC) approach.
(viii) Explain the principles of provision of a safe hospital and community environment.
(ix) Describe the reception and care of clients’ needs.
(x) Describe the care of clients with special needs.
(xi) Analyse the progressive patient care.
(xii) Explain experience of loss, death and grief.
(xiii) Outline the first aid to offer to the victims of accidents.
