Rationale
This course is fundamental to the programme as it introduces students to key psychological principles that influence health and nursing care. It equips future nurses with skills to understand and manage psychosomatic conditions, pain, and emotional responses that influence patient behaviour and wellbeing. By gaining a foundation in general and clinical psychology, students are better prepared to provide compassionate, patient-centred care and support individuals through various health challenges.
This course aims at equipping students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes on the role of psychology in the provision of health care.
Learning Outcomes (Competences)
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain basic concepts in psychology.
(ii) Describe mental defence mechanism.
(iii) Describe memory distinctions.
(iv) Outline sensation and perception.
(v) Describe overview of psychosomatic illnesses.
(vi) Describe psychoneuroimmunology (PNI).
(vii) Describe the theories of psychosomatic illnesses.
(viii) Evaluate pain and pain management.
(ix) Discuss promoting health and enhancing treatment.
(x) Explain motivational interviewing in health behaviour change.
(xi) Explain death and dying.
