Course Description:

Rationale


This course is designed to introduce the concepts of sociology related to community and social institutions in Zambia and its relationship with health, illness and nursing.

The aim of the course is to equip students with knowledge, attitude and skills on the basic concepts and sociological theories with particular reference to nursing care.

 

Learning Outcomes (Competences)  


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     Apply the basic concepts and theories in sociology to nursing.  
(ii)    Describe the basic concepts of culture and their impact in nursing. 
(iii)   Describe the defining aspects of Socialisation and their impact in nursing.
(iv)   Describe the theories of deviance and collective behaviour. 
(v)    Outline social institutions and determine their impact in society. 
(vi)   Describe the systems of social stratification.
(vii)  Describe the concepts of social demography of health. 
(viii)  Analyse social change and development. 
(ix)   Explain social stress. 
(x)    Explain the sick role and the choice of healing options. 
(xi)   Describe the role of social policy in health care delivery. 
(xii)  Describe the nature of nurses’ attitude.
