Module/Course Description

Course Title: Mathematics

Course Code: UU-MTH-1130-ZM

Programme: Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing

Credits: 15.00

Course Description:

Rationale

The mathematics course is essential to the programme as it equips students with the skills to perform calculations commonly required in medicine. These include calculations for prescribing medication, record keeping of vital signs, assessing acid-based status and reading graphical information in echo cardiogram or ultrasound reports. The course also covers the review of laboratory results and their implications when values fall outside the normal ranges. In addition, it supports students in evaluating the plausibility of research findings through data analysis and the statistical review of medical literature. Finally, the course will assist students in analysing situations by emphasising practical application and fostering conceptual understanding using different approaches/strategies such as geometric presentation and problem solving.
The aim of the course is to introduce students to fundamental mathematical concepts and methods in order to develop the analytical and problem-solving skills necessary for understanding and applying mathematical reasoning in clinical contexts.

Learning Outcomes (Competences)

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     Describe the basic concepts of functions of calculus.
