Course Description:

Rationale
This course aims to develop an advanced understanding of the concepts, ideas, approaches, policies, challenges and limitations of sustainable cities. Students will get familiarised with urban challenges step up by the debates on sustainable development and global environmental change.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i) Interpret on an advanced level concepts and theories of sustainable cities.
(ii) Critically examine ideological, ethical and institutional perspectives on sustainable Cities.
(iii) Identify the contradictions, possibilities and challenges of applying these concepts for urban policy.
(iv) Apply and critically comment on a number of tools, policies, approaches and innovations related to sustainable cities.
(v) Understand how various challenges faced by urban areas, such as poverty, inequalities, health and violence, can impact the development of a sustainable city.
(vi) Examine and interpret a case study based on a sustainable cities challenge.
