Course Code: UU-MTH-2000-ZM

Programme: Bachelor in Hospitality Management - BL

Credits: 12.00

Course Description:

Rationale

The Statistics I course is essential for imparting fundamental quantitative skills to students, enabling problem-solving and decision-making across diverse fields. Students will gain proficiency in data analysis and interpretation through practical exercises and theoretical investigation of important statistical concepts. The course will also acquaint students with basic statistical ideas, and important distributions as well as provide a thorough grounding in statistical principles and techniques and introduce students to both Classical and Empirical Probabilities.

The course's ultimate aim is to develop a data-driven mindset in students so they can approach real-world problems with arguments supported by statistics.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Apply basic statistical procedures, including descriptive statistics.
(ii)   Compute measures of central tendency and variation for both grouped and ungrouped data, comprehensively interpreting their significance.
(iii)  Solve theoretical and empirical probability problems, discerning between the two types of probabilities.
(iv)  Calculate probabilities for binomial and normal distributions, as well as confidence intervals, demonstrating proficiency in statistical computation.
(v)  Develop a strong foundation in statistical theory and practical skills in statistical analysis, enabling effective interpretation and application of statistical results.
