Course Description:
Background and Rationale
This course aims to develop an understanding of the management consulting industry and how consultants function that is important for both public and private sector managers; therefore acquire all the necessary tools to help them as managers with the problems occurring within the organisations they are employed. Focus will be placed on the transfer of students’ academic knowledge into different activities, designed to offer effective solutions and to enable them to reflect on the process of working as a consultant and develop a personal vision on the role of a process consultant. Students through this course will develop an understanding and skills in dealing with sensitive issues in consultancy, such as trust building, ethical issues, implementation issues and overcoming change resistance, as well as acquiring skills in acting as a facilitator in team-building and as a process consultant. They will be encouraged to examine management as a method of improving business practices and as a profession and to examine the most effective current practice procedures so as to design the core of the consultancy process. The course will end, having laid the foundations for students to develop understanding in concepts such as high professional standards in management consulting and it will provide information and knowledge on general consultancy.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
1) Analyse the success factors of consultancies.
2) Prepare tenders and design change processes internally or with consulting support.
3) Provide consulting support.
4) Describe the steps of the consultancy process.
5) Compare the professional and ethical standards to which consultants should work with.
6) Demonstrate how these standards influence the work of consultants.
7) Explain the key tasks in the management of consultancy projects.
8) Build client relationships.
9) Analyse sensitive issues in consultancy affairs.
10) Designate the consultancy problem-solving process.
