Programme: Master of Arts in English Language and Literature

Course Description:

Rationale

This course introduces students to some of the key technical and imaginative skills needed to write creatively.  It seeks to familiarise them with representative literary texts from a significant number of historical, geographical, and cultural contexts as well as equip them with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of critical, theoretical, and technical traditions relating to the production of original literary works.  The course thus endeavours to render students able to effectively communicate what it is they, as writers, do, and to effectively present literary works, their own as well as the works of others.
In the quest to produce students who can produce a wide range of technical texts, the course has deliberately been crafted to ensure basic concepts and necessary theoretical and analytical tools in literature are attained. It is the expectation of society that universities must produce fine and quality products; therefore, this course is strategically placed on the platform of refining writing skills in all students. By engaging with the course, students will be encouraged to develop a range of imaginative responses to lectures and writing workshops within the framework of creative reading, drafting, discussion, and re-writing. The course examines a range of literary devices and techniques employed by contemporary poets, playwrights, and prose-fiction writers, which students will explore as models for their original creative writing. Through this course, students will be able to develop their unique writing style as they explore the different genres.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to key technical and imaginative skills needed for creative writing.
