Course Description:

Background and Rationale
 

The main objectives of the course are to:
• introduce students to a variety of texts by 20th- and 21st century American authors
• develop the students’ capacity for analysis, synthesis and interpretation of problem like ethnicity, nationhood and the “American dream”
• foster critical reasoning in reading and writing about exemplary literary texts
• develop research skills appropriate to the field demonstrated in coherent assignments and projects related to modern and contemporary American literature

Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
• engage in reading exemplary texts from 20th- and 21st century American fiction, poetry and drama
• orally transmit an understanding of these texts in English
• formulate interpretations of literary texts in coherent research papers which reflect genre and thematic diversity
• use secondary sources as reference and a variety of critical approaches to reading • understand the traditions and innovations in modern and contemporary American literature
