Course Description:
Background and Rationale
The course provides students with the basic principles of English phonetics and phonology, which are a useful tool in teaching and learning English pronunciation. The course introduces basic terminology used in the field preparing the students for future more in-depth study of the field at a higher level (e.g. MA courses in linguistics). Students are familiarised with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and principles of phonemic and phonetic speech transcription. A brief description of various accents of English is presented.
Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
Describe the way English sounds are produced
Describe the structure of English syllable
Tell which clusters of sounds are allowed in English
Describe and identify English stress, rhythm and intonation patterns
Describe and identify speech processes in connected speech in English
Transcribe speech using the IPA
Name main phonological theories
Identify basic features of some accents of English
