Rationale
Advanced Obstetrics and Gynaecology II builds on Surgical and Medical Management of Women. which will further introduce the student to the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. Obstetrics and Gynaecology is concerned with the health of a pregnant woman and the general well-being of a woman.
A pregnant woman presents a challenge and her needs require special attention for her and the pregnancy whereas diseases of a woman present a gender challenge. Hence, this course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of preconceptional issues and deals with pregnancy from conception to onset of labour, during delivery and puerperium. The course also seeks to introduce the student to the complex interactions of social, cultural and physiological processes that females undergo from puberty to menopause and after.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain what is involved in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
(ii) Obtain a history from the patient or relative of the presenting complaints.
(iii) Perform a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Make a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v) Identify investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Prepare a treatment management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Observe, carry out and assist with relevant Obstetrics and Gynaecology medical and surgical procedures where appropriate.
