Paediatrics II – Advanced Illnesses, Advanced Injuries and Infectious Diseases of ChildrenModule Details

Rationale 

The course Paediatrics II builds on Illnesses, Minor Injuries, and Infectious Diseases of Children which will further introduce students to the field of Paediatrics. Paediatrics is concerned with the health of infants, children and adolescents; their growth and development and their opportunities to achieve full potential as adults.
The young are often among the most vulnerable or disadvantaged in society, and thus their needs require special attention. As physicians who voluntarily assume a responsibility for children’s health from conception to maturity, paediatricians are not only concerned with organ systems and biological processes but also with social and environmental factors which impact on the health and well-being of children and their families.

The aim of the course is to provide an understanding of the concepts, principles and practice(s) of Paediatrics and child health. 

Learning Outcomes 

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Demonstrate an understanding of what is involved in Paediatrics.
(ii)   Obtain a history from the patient or relative of the presenting complaints.
(iii)  Perform a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv)  Formulate a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v)   Select appropriate investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi)  Develop a treatment management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Observe, perform, and assist with relevant paediatric procedures where appropriate.
