Course Description:
Rationale
The surgical treatment of disease conditions using various surgical techniques is a mainstay of general surgical care. An understanding of how the various treatment s and procedures used in treating surgical disease is important in restoring the patient to a life of well-being.
The course Surgery II aims to build on Surgery I which will further introduce students to the field of Surgery with emphasis on the surgical practice and pathology seen in this part of the world, apprises students on the clinical examination of the surgical patient and inculcates the appropriate attitude to the practice of surgery.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain what is involved in General Surgery.
(ii) Take a history from the patient or relative of the presenting complaints.
(iii) Perform a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Make a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v) Identify investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Prepare a treatment management plan for the patient to present to the responsible surgeon.
(vii) Observe, carry out and assist with relevant surgical procedures where appropriate.
