Rationale
Psychiatric illnesses are increasingly seen more with individual living longer lifespans. An understanding of how to treat these in important and help in the wellbeing of all individuals particularly the elderly.
This course aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be in a position to diagnose, treat and prevent mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Appreciate the scope and principles applied in Psychiatry.
(ii) Obtain a history from the patient or relative regarding the presenting complaints.
(iii) Conduct a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Formulate a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v) Determine appropriate investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Develop a treatment management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Participate in relevant psychiatry treatments and procedures where appropriate.
