Course Description:
Rationale
The course is the core ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology’ clerkship that introduces the student to the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. Obstetrics and Gynaecology is concerned with the health of a pregnant woman and the general well-being of a woman in general.
A pregnant woman presents a challenge and her needs require special attention for her and the pregnancy whereas diseases of a woman present a gender challenge. This course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of pre-conceptional issues and deals with pregnancy from conception to onset of labour, during delivery and puerperium. The course also seeks to introduce the student to the complex interactions of social, cultural and physiological processes that females undergo from puberty to menopause and after.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Demonstrate an understanding of what is involved in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
(ii) Obtain a history from the patient or relative regarding the presenting complaints.
(iii) Conduct a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Formulate a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v) Select and interpret appropriate investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Develop a treatment and management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Observe, assist, and perform relevant obstetric and gynaecological medical and surgical procedures where appropriate.
