Rationale
The course Paediatrics I introduces the student to the field of paediatrics. Paediatrics is concerned with the health of infants, children and adolescents; their growth and development; and their opportunities to achieve full potential as adults.
The young are often among the most vulnerable or disadvantaged in society, and thus their needs require special attention. As physicians, who voluntarily assume a responsibility for children’s health from conception to maturity paediatrician are not only concerned with organ systems and biological processes but with social and environmental factors which impact on the health and well-being of children and their families. The aim of the course is to provide a basic understanding of the concepts, principles and practice(s) of Paediatrics and child health.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Demonstrate an understanding of what is involved in Paediatrics.
(ii) Obtain a detailed history from the patient or relative regarding the presenting complaints.
(iii) Conduct a physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Formulate a differential diagnosis for the presenting complaint.
(v) Select and interpret appropriate investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Develop a treatment and management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Observe, assist, and perform relevant paediatric procedures where appropriate.
