Course Description:
Rationale
The surgical treatment of disease conditions using various surgical techniques is a mainstay of general surgical care. An understanding of how the various treatment s and procedures used in treating surgical disease is important in restoring the patient to a life of well-being.
This course aims to introduce the principles and practice of surgery with emphasis on the surgical pathology seen in this part of the world. It seeks to apprise students on the clinical examination of the surgical patient and to inculcate the appropriate attitude to the practice of surgery.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and scope of General Surgery.
(ii) Obtain a comprehensive history from patients or their relatives regarding presenting complaints.
(iii) Conduct a physical examination as part of the assessment of surgical conditions.
(iv) Formulate a differential diagnosis for surgical presentations.
(v) Select and interpret appropriate investigations to confirm a preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Develop a treatment and management plan to present to the responsible surgeon.
(vii) Observe, assist, and perform relevant surgical procedures where appropriate.
