Course Description:
Rationale
The treatment of disease conditions using therapeutic interventions is a mainstay of medical care. An understanding of how the majority of diseases is treated is important in restoring the patient to a life of well-being.
The aims of the course are to introduce the principles of internal medicine as well as to the clinical skills for obtaining relevant history and eliciting physical signs. The course will also introduce to students the attitudes required to practice clinical medicine and to the bedside practical procedures and investigations in internal medicine.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Demonstrate an understanding of the scope and principles of internal medicine.
(ii) Obtain a history from the patient or relative regarding the presenting complaints.
(iii) Conduct a systematic physical examination as part of investigating the presenting complaint.
(iv) Formulate a differential diagnosis based on clinical findings.
(v) Determine appropriate investigations to confirm the preliminary diagnosis.
(vi) Develop a treatment and management plan for the patient to present to the responsible clinician.
(vii) Observe, perform, and assist with relevant medical procedures where appropriate.
