Course Description:
Rationale
Understanding the normal functioning of human blood and body fluids is an important basis upon which any abnormal changes occurring can be treated medical or surgically.
The Haematological Processes in Health and Disease course aims to provide the students with an understanding of the principles and concepts of various haematological processes in health and disease.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Define terminologies used to describe disease mechanisms and processes.
(ii) Identify tissue changes in varying pathologies on histology and gross organ appearance.
(iii) Explain the physiology and functions of blood cells.
(iv) Analyse disorders of the blood cells, including their aetiology, pathogenesis, and laboratory diagnosis.
(v) Perform laboratory investigations on patients with haematological disorders and recommend further complementary investigations.
(vi) Recognise the common disorders of red and white cells from examination of blood films.
(vii) Describe the physiology of blood and blood cells competently.
