Course Description:

Rationale 


The correct application of pharmacological preparations, treatment and medications to the human body is important in instituting corrective clinical and surgical interventions.

This course aims to provide the students with a thorough understanding of the fundamental concepts of pharmacology and enable them to describe the pharmacology and therapeutic applications of drugs acting on various living systems. 

 

Learning Outcomes 


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)     Describe the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and their applications.
(ii)     Explain the process of chemical transmission in the autonomic nervous system and central nervous system.
(iii)    Explain the mechanisms of actions of drugs in producing beneficial and harmful effects.
(iv)    Determine the drug treatment of specific disease states.
(v)     Describe the beneficial outcomes, drug interactions, and harmful effects resulting from the drug treatment of the diseases.
(vi)    Apply the general principles of effective, safe, and cost-conscious prescribing to achieve optimal pharmacotherapeutic outcomes for the patient.
(vii)   Define the role of prescribers in “preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents” and containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
(viii)  Describe the principles of pharmacology and therapeutics of the Respiratory and Cardiovascular System.
