Module/Course Description
Course Title: Physiology II – Functions of Human Body Systems
Course Code: UU-MED-1160-ZM
Programme: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB)
Credits: 13.50
Course Description:
Rationale
An understanding of the normal function of organ systems, individual organs, cells, and biomolecules is essential for the preservation of good health. This will equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to correct and modify abnormal physiological functioning of biophysical and biochemical processes, haemostatic control and communication among cells in order to promote continuity of good health.
Physiological functions of human body Systems aims to provide an understanding on the importance of Physiology for the mechanisms of chemical and physical functions in the human body.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Describe the relationship between flow, pressure, and resistance in the vascular system.
(ii) Explain the autonomic nervous system and its role in the physiological regulation of the cardiovascular system.
(iii) Define shock and its major causes.
(iv) Identify the features and causes of hypertension and cardiac failure.
(v) Compare the pulmonary and systemic circulations.
(vi) Explain gas transportation, regulation of respiration, and respiratory adjustments in health and disease.
(vii) Describe the structure and function of a nephron and the renal blood supply.
(viii) Assess methods for evaluating renal function.
(ix) Explain the tubular handling of various substances in terms of filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.
(x) Describe the effects of hormones on different organs.
