Module/Course Description
Course Title: Histology I – Development and Growth of the Early Human
Course Code: UU-MED-1130-ZM
Programme: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB)
Credits: 13.50
Course Description:
Rationale
The normal structure and function of cells in the early stages of development of the human embryo is the basis of the development of the human body and its organs. An understanding of this process is the basis upon which on can determine the deviation from normal and the possible ways in which abnormalities can be treated or controlled to within normal functionality.
The histology course aims to provide students with exposure and knowledge of the body cells, tissues, and organ systems as revealed by the light and electron in order to help them comprehend the microscopic organisation of all the organ systems of the human body.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Describe the microscopic structure of cells and tissues in relation to their function.
(ii) Identify normal tissues and organs by conducting a systematic examination of prepared microscopic slides.
(iii) Explain the stages of early human development and their relevance to organ system formation.
