Module/Course Description

Course Title: Physiology I – Cellular Physiology

Course Code: UU-MED-1120-ZM

Programme: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB)

Credits: 13.50

Course Description:

Rationale

The normal functioning of the human cells is an important part of understanding disease conditions and this is the basis upon which treatments can be offered to correct and repair diseased cell. An understanding of cellular physiology is the basis for understanding the functioning of various organs and organ systems.

The course aims to provide an integrated understanding of events at the level of molecules, cells and organs to give a holistic view of functioning of the human body in health and disease. It also aims to equip students with essential knowledge of the structure and function of cells, organs and organ systems as well as of the integrative mechanisms that exists between systems.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Explain the important aspects of cellular physiology, including haematology.
(ii)   Identify the various parts of the nerves and their functions, and illustrate transmission at synapses.
(iii)  Evaluate the importance of homeostasis in maintaining physiological balance.
(iv)  Analyse the morphological and functional characteristics of the different types of muscles.
(v)   Describe the structure and function of the conduction system of the heart including recording and interpretation of the electrocardiogram (ECG).
(vi)  Describe the relationship between flow, pressure and resistance in the vascular system.
(vii) Identify shock and its major causes.
(viii)Describe gas transportation, regulation of respiration and respiratory adjustments in health and disease.
