Course Description:

Rationale


This course will provide students with essential knowledge about fire in general and fire safety while focusing on the risk assessment procedure and fire safety management. Students will be equipped with the skills to form a successful fire prevention strategy. They will become familiar with the application of risk assessment at the event of a fire, the importance of inspection prior and during on such an event and to apply the fire safety regulations. They will acquire basic knowledge of the elements of fire, how fires can be caused, prevented, detected, controlled and extinguished. Finally, they will be introduced to the various methods, software and equipment that is used to detect malfunctions and deficiencies.  

Learning outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Demonstrate knowledge of what are the elements of fire.
(ii)   Explain how risk assessment may prevent misfortune events.
(iii)  Describe how fire safety is related to occupational health and safety.
(iv)  Define the basic principles of building fire safety.
(v)   Implement basic fire safety inspection for the development of a fire safety protection system.
(vi)  Categorise the various fire risks for a building structure. 
(vii) Apply national and international fire safety legislation and fire safety code. 
(viii) Advise on the various protective measures and equipment that have to be implemented for the different fire risks based on the operation. 
(ix)  Discuss the effect of regulatory practices on fire prevention.
(x)   Develop deterministic and probabilistic fire risk assessments.
