Course Description:

Rationale


Research and Writing will provide students, who are preparing for a career, with proper writing communication skills at the workplace, that will reflect their professionalism. By discussing methods of primary research data collection (qualitative and quantitative), the structure of primary research papers and various documentation styles, students will be adequately prepared and confident to follow a professional path.


Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Create resumes, job application letters and memos.
(ii)   Distinguish the usefulness and formats of different types of technical writing.
(iii)  Write clearly, concisely, ethically and in a non-discriminatory way for maximum communication effectiveness.
(iv)  Solve problems of biased language and wordiness in the form of short exercises.
(v)   Distinguish various writing, organisational and editing techniques.
(vi)  Analyse written materials composed by others.
(vii) Identify the processes of conducting primary research and the writing of primary research papers, including:
i.     quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection
ii.    the structure of a primary research paper
iii.   various styles of source citation and documentation
iv.   ethics in data collection and writing
(viii)Illustrate increased self-awareness and self-confidence in writing through collaborative interaction with peers and through independent study.
