Course Description:
Rationale
This course will provide students with a thorough study of the most important international legislation governing health and safety which is adapted at a national level and creates the basis for how an organisation manages its health and safety policies as well as the obligation it has towards its stakeholders. Students will become familiar with the legal, financial, organisational and strategic aspects of the health and safety legislation and the most important legislating bodies. Finally, students will understand how following the correct legal framework and setting up a complete safety management system will enable the organisation to promote a safe and healthy work environment.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Explain the international health and safety legislations and how these are adapted at a national level and comprise the basis of creating a safe and healthy working environment for employees.
(ii) Describe the steps to implement a successful safety management system.
(iii) Identify the legal challenges for state, employers and employees in order to ensure the successful implementation of a safety management system at the workplace.
(iv) Explain the ethical issues that health and safety professionals will face while ensuring that all the stakeholders will comply with the safety management system.
