Course Description:
Rationale
The Introduction to Health and Safety course will provide students with the general concept of health and safety and how this is managed in different sized companies in the various industry sectors. The students will gain knowledge on health and safety policy development and on the necessary steps from planning to implementing a company-wide system. They will learn about the importance of risk assessment and safety management which enables safety behaviour and increased productivity by minimising hazards and risks in the workplace and improving control measures.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Discuss the impact of health and safety management on the functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling across the organisation.
(ii) Apply the basic principles of risk assessment in the workplace.
(iii) Implement a health and safety management system.
(iv) Identify the financial, organisational and strategic benefits of health and safety at the workplace.
(v) Perform hazard identification and analysis in order to produce solutions for the elimination of risk.
