Rationale


This course is an introduction and an overview to Organisational Psychology which is also known as Industrial Psychology or Occupational Psychology which is the discipline of psychology that studies the structure of an organisation 
and the ways in which the people interact and behave within it, usually undertaken in order to improve the organisational performance and design. Organisational Psychology investigates the motives underlying employees’ attitudes, actions, efforts and job satisfaction. Additionally, the course will provide a sound knowledge of the application of basic psychological theories in the context of work, to improve students’ understanding on the relationship of psychology with people selection, development and assessment, as well as, key organisational problems that arise through these practices.

Learning outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Define the discipline of organisational psychology and describe its purpose and relevant practices.
(ii)   Interpret the different psychological theories related to people management, job satisfaction, employee motivation.
(iii)  Examine the relationship between psychology and employee recruitment, training, development and evaluation.
(iv)  Evaluate the psychological influence on employees’ behavior, performance and employee relations.
(v)   Assess the impact of employee behaviour on organisational structure and design.
(vi)  Describe and distinguish key research methods used in organisational psychology.
(vii) Apply psychological theories to Human Resource Management strategy and related issues.
