Course Description:

Rationale


Computer Systems will provide the student with an overview of the developments in computer hardware and software from the initial steps of generation to modern and future time, while introducing the components of information systems, exploring the different types of software and considering their SDLC. Furthermore, the examination of information systems in organisations, security issues, ethics, and crime in the digital world will enable the students to properly practice computer fundamentals.    

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i)    Discuss the role of information systems and technology in our digital world.
(ii)   Describe the developments occurring in the information technology era from its initiation to present time and the future trends.
(iii)  Describe the components of an information system. More specifically and concerning information system’s hardware the student should be able to describe and analyse the characteristics of the processing unit, input and output devices, and primary and secondary storage.
(iv)  Suggest a certain computer configuration based on specified organisation or personal needs.
(v)   Demonstrate understanding of data representation and use different number systems.
(vi)  Describe an I.S. professional and his/her role and career opportunities in an organisation.
(vii) Differentiate between application and systems software and subtypes.
(viii)Demonstrate understanding of the requirements for developing an information system, process (e.g. SDLC), computer programming languages, and data storage.
(ix)  Discuss data communications, the Internet and web resources.
(x)  Demonstrate understanding of how to secure information systems resources, focusing on both human and technological safeguards.
(xi)  Explain how information systems raise ethical concerns in society, and how they influence crime.
