Rationale 


Working within the public sector demands its own particular project management challenges. This course discusses the theory, key principles, tools, and techniques necessary to build a solid project management foundation, highlighting the challenges specific to the nature of the public sector. From examining elements of project management framework in the public sector to dealing with the constraints of Project Performance, this course equips students with the competencies and skills needed to effectively manage projects within the public fields. Students will explore the significance of stakeholder management, risk management and quality management in the execution of projects while getting acquainted with other factors leading to the successful management of public sector projects.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Identify the differences between project management in the public and private sector.
(ii)   Describe the typical phases of project management’s lifecycle and the resources needed for each phase.
(iii)  Identify the three project performance constraints and their significance in measuring project performance.
(iv)  Describe various tools and techniques that can be used by project managers to better position their projects for success.
(v)   Produce an integrated project management plan document.
(vi)  Identify control risks associated with real-life projects situations.
(vii) Calculate project expenses by taking into account relevant factors such as expected costs, variances, and profits.
(viii) Develop a project scope while considering relevant factors.
(ix)  Describe risk management and quality improvement techniques in public sector project management. 
(x)   List the main activities and responsibilities of a project manager.
(xi)  Determine ways to prevent some of the most prevalent problems that arise in project management in public organisations.
