Course Description:

Rationale 


This course will explore the historical, theoretical, and other aspects of diplomacy and its significance in conflict resolution processes. Students will acquire a deep understanding of a number of core conflict concepts, including its root causes, consequences and different types and manifestations. Diplomacy’s nature, basic functions, different modes and styles as well as its evolution and key developments in reaction to global change will be emphasised throughout the course. Students will get acquainted with the key diplomatic tools for conflict management and will examine the geostrategic, political, economic and psychological factors that allow or limit diplomatic settlements in conflict situations. The significance of diplomacy in conflict situations will be further investigated through the study of historical case studies. Key topics covered include mediating and negotiating strategies used during conflict resolution processes and the factors and variables determining their success or failure. Last, students will have the opportunity to discuss on the necessary knowledge and skills required for an individual to perform the complicated art of diplomacy.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Describe how the different domestic and international actors are involved in contemporary conflicts.
(ii)   Determine the root causes and consequences of conflict.
(iii)  Analyse the international political, cultural, and economic background within which diplomacy takes place. 
(iv)  Describe the historical evolution of diplomatic practice.
(v)   Evaluate cases of historical and contemporary diplomatic engagement.
(vi)  Describe common diplomatic strategies and techniques used as alternatives to the use/threat of force. 
(vii) Assess the role of diplomacy in resolving international conflicts.
(viii) Describe the main functions, styles and modes of diplomacy.
(ix)  Assess the role of international organisations in diplomatic efforts to control or settle violent disputes.  
(x)   Evaluate the role of diplomacy in world politics.
(xi)  Evaluate how different factors influence the negotiation and mediation process and outcomes.
(xii) Identify the necessary skills and knowledge required of a professional diplomat.
