Course Description:

Rationale 


This course aims to analyse contemporary international security issues. Crucial topics that will be discussed include the nature of security, security agenda as well as the developments in the international security scene since the end of the Cold War. Students will delve deeply into the evaluation and analysis of contemporary security threats including nuclear proliferation, civil conflict and terrorism. Particular focus will be placed on aspects of strategic and intelligence theories since they are considered to be central features of international security. To conclude, the course explores techniques and tactics for dealing with or preventing international crises.

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:


(i)    Elaborate on theories and definitions of international security.
(ii)   Describe how various forms of security interact.
(iii)  Evaluate the factors classifying a problem as a security threat.
(iv)  Appraise traditional and contemporary security threats.
(v)   Identify the actors that contribute to the causes of violent conflicts.
(vi)  Apply theories of the field of international security studies to understand and explain real-world events.
(vii) Elaborate on traditional concerns surrounding military power.
(viii) Define the role and impact of intelligence on international security.
(ix)  Describe how governments and political actors respond to and address emerging or potential international security issues.
