Rationale


Principles of Sociology introduces students to the sociological study of society though promotion of knowledge and understanding of central concepts, application of social theory, use of scientific evidence and promotion of critical evaluation of common knowledge and perceptions about various social situations, found in the University and working environment as well. 

Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i)    Critically explain basic sociological concepts.    
(ii)   Conceptualise social situations using these concepts. 
(iii)  Outline the basic principles of the mainstream sociological traditions (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, rational choice theory).
(iv)  Apply theoretical thinking to empirical reality.
(v)   Demonstrate empirical evidence in favor or against theoretical explanations. 
(vi)  Critically evaluate common knowledge and perceptions about current social issues.
