Course Description:

Rationale
There is great evidence of economies that have grown with the creation of entrepreneurial activities. The concept of entrepreneurship has become generic and hence a requirement in every programme. This is so, because it will introduce students, at every level, to concepts, skills, abilities and knowledge to create wealth and hence improve oneself and the economy of the country. Critical thinking and thinking outside the box are encouraged. The course lays foundations of business, which includes studying the external forces that influence business activities. Included are the factors involved in the creation of new business, such as the different types of ownership available. The importance of small businesses and the industries in which small businesses are found will be discussed. This course is important given the number of small enterprises that a number of individuals are engaged in as entrepreneurial venture. The course provides theoretical information relevant for the potential teacher to delve in and instil in the students.  The skills, knowledge and abilities gained in this course will help the student plan a business set goals and objectives.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:


i.    Participate in business activities by demonstrating the knowledge gained through this course in the external forces that influence business activities.
ii.   Explore the entrepreneurship process.
iii.   Analyse the challenges involved in starting a new business.
iv.   Explore the different venture opportunities.
v.    Discuss the different entrepreneurial ventures and identify potential financial resources in order to be able to start up.
vi.   Explain what the manager of a venture does and what the functions of management are.
vii.   Plan business processes and discuss the importance of planning.
viii.   Discuss the importance of teamwork within an organisation and the importance of various forms of communication.
