Course Description:
Rationale
Living an active life is a habit one should develop and hence physical education is one course that helps begin the process of adopting an active way of life. Dance and Physical education should be an all-inclusive course that offers students the chance to have a meaningful and active participation in physical education. The course aims to engage students in physical activities which are essential for the life of everyone for a number of reasons including the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, the development of concepts such as fairness, personal and social responsibility, leadership and team working skills. Dance & Physical Education should be presented with fun and enjoyment so that the complex process which is determined by various social, biological and, critically, pedagogical influences is achieved. Participants will learn how to enhance their students’ imagination, thinking skills, intra-personal understanding and skills needed when collaborating with others. Based on these competencies students will achieve intellectual and personal growth in the long term. The course, intends to stimulate a passion for dance and physical education in order to raise its importance and contribute to the development of dance and sport. Students will be guided to develop some multifaceted skills in order to be in position to deliver the course using various modes given their different cultural and traditional backgrounds.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i. Explain the functions of the skeletal system, the classification of bones and the divisions of the skeletal system.
ii. Identify and describe the three different types of exercise, namely aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise and flexibility exercise in both dance and PE.
iii. Explain the significance of health and nutrition in dance and physical education.
iv. Explore the different types of sports, including track and field events, water sports and team sports such as hockey, volleyball, rugby and soccer.
v. Discuss the benefits of playing sports, including how HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases can be tackled through dance and sport.
vi. Distinguish the cognitive, emotional and kinesthetic goals, which are achieved through the implementation of dance and PE.
vii. Explore current trends in the various creative industries.
viii. Explain how personal, social, emotional and cultural meanings are conveyed through dance and PE.
ix. Identify basic physical, biological and physiological, and motor characteristics of children aged 6-12.
x. Create and perform dance and PE programs adjusted to the age and mobility skills of a group of students.
xi. Implement/apply modern methods and teaching styles in their PE and dance lessons.
