Course Description:

Rationale
The course is intended to provide a historical background to the education system in the Zambian context and aspects of an international level. The course will equip the students with all the relevant information needed for every teacher in order to deliver in the context of this background. Furthermore, the course enables students to build on such a background in order to improve the current education system.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:

i.    Describe the development of education and trace the history of education.
ii.   Explain the history of education and the different challenges over the years.
iii.   Explain the education policy in Zambia today and its philosophical rationale to the educational policy.
iv.   Explain the historic contexts and shifting values from which various social and philosophical theories originate.
v.    Discuss the relevance of the history of education.
vi.   Explain different concepts in the History of Education such as formal and informal education and indigenous education.
vii.  Outline the teaching profession and how to uphold the professionalism.
viii.  Discuss the different education acts and their relevance to the Education System.
ix.    Examine the role of the government, goals and aims and the principles for the development of the education system.
