Course Description:

Rationale
The course provides a solid foundation on reading and writing skills at a university level. Enhancing students’ reading and writing skills is crucial in order to understand the importance of original work hence avoiding plagiarism and other vices. The course intends to prepare and equip students with the necessary skills for reading and writing assignments.


Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
i.       Distinguish academic writing from general reading and writing skills.
ii.      Read academic materials with ease.
iii.     Write academically through the utilisation of the academic skills gained through the course.
iv.     Prepare academic assignments.
v.      Reference their written work to avoid plagiarism.
vi.     Paraphrase and incorporate quotes successfully in a written assignment.
vii.    Explain the significance of academic reading, writing and originality of work.
viii.   Distinguish paraphrasing from direct quotations.
ix.    Identify reading strategies and their importance in academic skills.
