Course Description:

Rationale
The Environmental Governance course is about international processes and institutional frameworks, including financial mechanisms, that develop and facilitate the implementation of the agreements and policy mechanisms that regulate environmental protection. The overall goal of this course is to provide a complete knowledge in the field of Environmental Governance, specify the role of the main actors involved in the development of international environmental law and acquaint students with Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA).

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i) Analyse the concept of Environmental Governance (EG) and identify its main actors.
(ii) Explain the main elements of IEG and list the fundamental principles of good environmental governance.
(iii) Identify the role of governments, agencies and programs for the development and implementation of environmental law and policy.
(iv) Explain the current environmental governance regime.
(v) Recommend a specific legal instrument to deal with a particular environmental problem and consider a more suitable forum to negotiate such a legal instrument.
(vi) Identify the shortcomings and strengths of the current EG regime and describe the approaches for reforming it.
