Course Description:

Rationale
This course introduces the basic concepts of Sustainable Development. The aim is to provide a rich understanding of the history, politics, ethics and scientific foundations of SD that will inspire interest in deeper study. In addition, the main goal is to raise awareness among students as to the meaning of sustainable development but in particular its application in a variety of contexts spanning the public, private and ‘Third' sectors.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:

(i) Analyse the basic principles of sustainable development;
(ii) Identify issues in the integration of SD in national and local development policies and plans.
(iii) Incorporate SD ideas into organisations, policies, and initiatives by posing practical difficulties.
(iv) Recognise the multi-disciplinary knowledge of green innovation and the key aspects and dimensions of sustainable development.
(v) Identify current arguments and debates on sustainable development.
(vi) Explain the fundamental ethical and political issues raised by sustainable development challenges and concepts.
(vii) Explain the basic issues in implementing and managing sustainable development.
(viii) Engage in debates about the definition, analysis and prospects for realization of sustainable development.
(ix) Identify challenges in the integration of SD ideas.
(x) Discuss different solutions for implementing SD in the public and private sectors.
