Rationale
This course is essential in the programme since it deepens students' understanding in managerial finance and renders them capable of practically applying it. By covering fundamental finance principles and essential concepts like financial market operations, time value of money, securities valuation, risk analysis, and capital budgeting, the course equips students with strategic decision-making skills vital for tackling real-world challenges and succeeding in managerial positions.
The aim of this course is to enable students apply fundamental concepts from corporate finance theory to real business decisions.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students will be expected to:
(i) Analyse the importance and role of financial decisions in the organisation.
(ii) Analyse financial statements to inform decision-making.
(iii) Calculate time value of money concepts.
(iv) Measure risk and rates of return.
(v) Apply the concepts of discounting and compounding in the concept of financial management.
(vi) Assess the valuation of bonds and stocks.
(vii) Identify the impact of capital costs on business decisions.
(viii) Apply the concept of risk and cost of capital in capital budgeting.
(ix) Estimate the firm’s optimal capital structure.
