Background and Rationale


The main objectives of the course are to teach students how to:
• Explore major poets and themes of the British Romantic and Victorian periods
• Situate this work within a cultural and historical context
• Compare and contrast this work to other literature of the same period


Learning Outcomes
 

After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
 Analyse poems from the Romantic and Victorian in terms of form, style and content.
 Evaluate the development of poetry and its major concerns over the periods
 Incorporate cultural circumstances into an understanding of the texts
 Write analytical essays on topics drawn from the texts
 Analyse, assess and apply secondary critical sources on the subjects and texts studied
 Apply basic theoretical and philosophical concerns associated with the poetry of the period
