Background and Rationale
The main objectives of the course are to teach students how to:
• Explore major poets and themes of the British Romantic and Victorian periods
• Situate this work within a cultural and historical context
• Compare and contrast this work to other literature of the same period
Learning Outcomes
After completion of the course students are expected to be able to:
Analyse poems from the Romantic and Victorian in terms of form, style and content.
Evaluate the development of poetry and its major concerns over the periods
Incorporate cultural circumstances into an understanding of the texts
Write analytical essays on topics drawn from the texts
Analyse, assess and apply secondary critical sources on the subjects and texts studied
Apply basic theoretical and philosophical concerns associated with the poetry of the period
